CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The hangar’s arming room was crowded. All of Diana’s team members were present except for Hank, who was in the last hour of his drive to Colorado, and Bryant, who would again be staying back as their emergency option if something went catastrophically wrong. The techs loitered in a corner, ready to help if needed, and everyone else was donning equipment and choosing weapons.

She stepped outside the room and gestured, opening a portal to New Atlantis. Cali stepped through, armored in black and carrying her escrima sticks in sheaths on her thighs. Another portal admitted Ruby and Idryll, similarly garbed for combat. She waved them into the room and pointed them to a corner, where unidentifiable black uniforms and face and head coverings awaited.

It was vital that no one knew who was attacking the base, even though their enemies would surely guess it was her team. They won’t be able to positively conclude that Cali, Ruby, or Idryll are involved, and that’s what’s important. Too bad Morrigan’s weapon is so identifiable. The archer was wickedly good with her bow but not quite as proficient with the sort of weapons they’d be using for the op.

She stood on her chair and clapped to get everyone’s attention. “Okay, here’s the deal. We know the Army’s playing with artifacts, no doubt trying yet again to create their fantasy supersoldier, as they have countless times before. Unfortunately for them and us, there’s no way the plan will turn out well. Rhazdon’s legacy is unquestionably evil, and even if it seems like things are going right at first, the damn artifacts will worm their way into the soldiers’ brains and twist their minds to their own priorities.”

She let her gaze fall on each of her people as she spoke, connecting with them, making sure they saw the conviction in her eyes. “So, the program needs to be ended. Bryant’s friends in government have tried spreading the word very carefully, but it seems no one wants to listen. So, since they aren’t about to stop voluntarily, it’s on us to take care of it.”

Diana looked at the sea of faces turned toward her, attentive to her words. Even Max, in the corner beside Rath, seemed to be listening intently. “It’s a big nut to crack, but we have allies. You all know Cali, Ruby, and Idryll, and they’ll be running with us today. Kevin, Natasha, and their mercenaries have left clues that they might be interested in Ehrlich’s base in the north but are joining our op instead. Their infomancer, Cassandra, will also be helping us along.”

Tony replied, “Are you talking a lot to hide the fact that we have no plan?”

The rest laughed, and Diana joined in the mirth. “While I will admit that perhaps I have done such a thing in the distant past, this time, I’m not. We’re going to hit them simultaneously in the real world and the virtual one. Deacon and Cassandra will do what they can to breach the enemy systems to get whatever advantages we can from that angle.
